Ohhh Christmas. I could probably have a blog just dedicated to Christmas – I love it! I find the magic of the season so completely intoxicating.
The Christmas tree is one of the most recognized decorations, with nearly everyone having some version of it in their home during the holiday season. Now here’s the big question – real or fake tree? This is a holiday debate that I have found myself in the middle of many times. I grew up in a real Christmas tree house – my 82 year old grandmother still puts a real tree up every year. There is nothing like the smell of a fresh Christmas tree in your home. The entire experience of going out and searching for the perfect tree, chopping it down, even struggling to put it up straight, is simply the best. That being said, I myself have had a fake tree up for the last few years. Yes, I am as my brother calls me, a traitor. I switched to a fake tree for one very important reason – I can put it up weeks earlier than if I had a real one.
My tree was starting to look a bit weathered so I decided this past Christmas would be its last. If its getting thrown out after I figured I should do something fun and different with it.
Like hang it upside down!
Sometimes my ideas aren’t as easy to accomplish as I picture in my head. I thought I could just stick a heavy duty hook in the ceiling, tie some wire around the tree and hang it, done! Umm, it was definitely not that simple. For one thing I didn’t stop to think that when you flip a fake tree upside down all the branches fold up. Awesome. So I had to wire the top branches to the ceiling and then attach all the branches to the ones above them. It ended up taking 5 solid screws in the ceiling and a ton of wire to get the tree to stay up, or I guess I should say down. It was worth it though, I loved the way it looked! There was a lot of room at the top of the tree, and without there being a star, the space needed something. Something liiike nests made out of real birch branches with owls perched in them.
I know this look isn’t for everyone, and I would not have my tree up every year like this, but it was so fun! It made for a great conversation piece and there was so much room underneath for presents.
I can’t wait to start planning my tree for this holiday season!
