3 In Party Planning/ VI*VA*CIOUS ~ full of life and good spirits

Hot Diggity Dog

Wow has it really been three months since my last post??  Life has been busy with two jobs, school, helping my bestie with her wedding, and lets not forget dedicated wine drinking time.  As we all begin to crawl out of the darkness of winter, I think a fun spring post is in order!

This past week my mom celebrated her 60th Birthday, and while she was not overly excited about it, I refused to let it sneak by unacknowledged like she was hoping.  With her actual birthday being on a weekday I wanted to make sure I stopped in after work to at least give her a hug and wish her a Happy Birthday in person – and there was no way I was showing up empty handed.  Like most adults, my mom is hard to buy for.  If she wants something she gets it for herself.  Sure there is always flowers, and don’t get me wrong flowers are beautiful, but I wanted something different for her.  So I brought her a few of her favourite things, and by a few I mean 60.
60 cans of Pepsi, 60 bags of chips, and 60 Werthers candies.  Success!  She loved it.

My mom had made it clear that she did not want a party or other grand birthday celebration, but I was able to convice her to at least come for dinner.  Nothing big, just our little immediate family.  I wanted to serve a meal that she would really enjoy so I asked her if there was anything specific she would like.  After she suggested ordering pizza, which I immediately dismissed, she responded with “I would be happy with a hot dog”.
At first I thought there is no way I am serving hot dogs for my mom’s 60th birthday dinner, but then figured why not give her what she asked for.  Anyone who has been to a dinner at my house knows that we are always trying to take our dining experiences to the next level.  This time was no different – a  simple hot dog on a plate turned into a 26 topping hot dog and sausage bar!  They were served with garlic french fries and bacon macaroni and cheese (another dish my mom had mentioned she liked).  Was it the healthiest meal? Definitely not, but boy was it fun!  I am not that adventurous when it comes to toppings, but did forgo my normal mustard/ketchup and tried cheeze whiz and hickory sticks.  It was deeeelish!

Here is a list of toppings we used….

Tex Mex cheese
Mozzarella cheese
Pickles
Beets
Sauerkraut
Banana Peppers
Bacon
Onions
Crispy Fried Onions
Tomatoes
Hickory Sticks
Coney Sauce
Homemade Relish
Sweet Relish
Red Pepper Relish
Mustard
Ketchup
BBQ sauce
Mayo
Ranch Dressing
Heartbeat Hot Sauce
Sour Cream
Steak Sauce
Cheese Whiz
Spicy Antipasto
Pickled Hot Peppers

Cooking is by far not a strength of mine, and I could not have pulled this off without a couple awesome helpers. I am very fortunate to have people in my life who listen to my crazy ideas and help to make them happen.

Garlic French Fries

My mom’s partners birthday is only two days after hers, so naturally this dinner was for him as well.

I kept the decorating simple, using yellow tulips and pussy willow branches to create a casual spring centerpiece.

The Hot Dog Bar went over better than I expected, especially with my mom.  If you are looking for a fun, family friendly meal, I highly recommend trying this.

Frankly, I relished the chance to ketchup with my family.  Hehe get it?? No?  Well, not every pun can be a weiner.

I’ll stop now.
